Story # 1
From Mocker to Seeker
My name is Deepa and this is my Story…
I was born into a Hindu family in India. Growing up I was always interested in religious practices and practiced all the required rituals. I had always questioned deep inside as to the reasons for and purpose of the duties but did not dare question it or explore other faith. I had especially developed this animus toward Christians as I perceived them as forcing people to convert. In some ways I looked at it fanatical or even intolerant. “How arrogant it is to think that their way is the only way”, I often thought.
When I finished high school due to several unexpected sequence of events (or God’s humor), I ended up in a Women’s Christian College. I was one of 5 Hindu students in a class of some 20 plus students. Psalms were part of the curriculum, and we were required to buy a copy of the New Testament. I refused to buy it and hoped to skip that question in the exam.
As I continued my passionate opposition to anything remotely “Christian,” I couldn’t ignore one of my classmates who takes the same bus and travels with me to classes each day. There was something different about her. She was not just kind and compassionate to everyone, even strangers, but was very principled and bold in standing up for what is right. We often debated the topic of God, religion and life in general. In one such conversation she talked about God speaking to us. This intrigued me. I pray a lot but never heard God, I said in almost a tone of mockery. She calmly responded with a smile, maybe you are calling Him by a wrong name? It was a profound statement from an 18-year-old. I pretended to brush it off with a laugh, but it made me think. I went on a pursuit to search for the real “name” of God. I wasn’t going to take her word for it.
After reading excerpts from Vedas, Quran and Bible , the concept of personal God in the Bible intrigued me. I simply asked Jesus, if you are God and what I read about you is true, please reveal yourself to me and I will follow you. He did! He spoke to me through dreams, through answered prayers, through the Holy Spirit, a few years after that He even spoke to me loud and clear in an audible voice. It was during a very difficult time, and I asked God why He is allowing this trial and He said clearly “Because I Love You”. It did not make sense, but a great peace filled me and gave me the strength to cross that phase. Many years later I was able to see the "why" behind that situation and saw that He did allow that because He Loved me, and set my foot on a strong and stable ground.
